Solid Waste Fees FAQ
- What is a solid waste fee?
A solid waste fee is a fee, in addition to your property taxes, that is assessed to fund solid waste collection and disposal activities of the county. These
fees, in addition to tipping fees paid to the county by municipalities and private haulers, fund the operation of the landfill and convenience sites located
throughout the County.
- Who pays the fee?
The fee is assessed on each residential property except for those within the City of Rocky Mount, or the Towns of Tarboro, Princeville, Pinetops, Macclesfield,
Whitakers, Conetoe, and Sharpsburg, who bill and collect solid waste usually on utility bills. The fee is assessed per dwelling, to the owner of the dwelling,
so owners of mobile homes on rented lots are assessed the fee, not the land owner.
- How much is the solid waste fee?
The solid waste fee is $100 per residential dwelling. If you have private garbage pickup, or live in a mobile home park with dumpster pickup, you can qualify for
a reduced solid waste fee of only $40 per residential dwelling?
- What about the Towns of Leggett and Speed?
The Town of Leggett bills and collects its own taxes, and uses the same fees as the county. The Town of Speed has a $25 Solid Waste fee annually for all residential
properties within the town, which is billed and collected by the County along with other property taxes.
- Who determines the amount of the fees?
The solid waste fee is set by the County Commissioners each year for properties outside of towns. Fees for properties within towns are set by the governing board
of each town.
- How does the County know if I have private garbage pickup?
Private garbage collection companies that serve Edgecombe County provide lists of their customers as of January 1st of each year. New customers listed will have
their fee reduced. Customers who cancel service will be changed to the full fee. We also have a list of which mobile home parks have dumpster pickup, and which
do not.
- What if I have garbage pickup, but am assessed the $100 fee?
If you are assessed the incorrect fee, you should bring in proof from the company that provides the service to you, that you were a customer receiving service
as of January 1st of that year. Like taxes, fees are assessed to the owner as of January 1st, based on the conditions that existed on that date.
